What happens every time you make a decision to change your outcome: the timeline around reaching that goal changes. This is fine, so long as you know that if you keep changing your mind, it will be really difficult to finish anything to the degree of result you wish to achieve. I say degree of result, as many goals that require consistent, dedicated focus towards a specific outcome. Bigger picture goals are less likely to materialize out of thin air and overnight, it’s just a fact. Look how long athletes train on a consistent and daily basis before they play a single game.
Write down right now what your top 4 goals were as of January 1st this year. Write down all of the goals, actually, though I want you to focus on your top business goal, top money goal, top personal goal and top wellness goal.
The truth about objectives and goals isn’t really that hitting the target is the big win. The fact of the matter is that the consistency required to hit these targets has been present. Consistency is born out of habit and fuelled by desire or passion. The methods and approaches to achieve this outcome get to be flexible and can look very different for everyone – the point is that the methods are measured along the way (to ensure they’re working) and to also ensure those methods/approaches are still focused on hitting that desired target/outcome.
As time goes on if we aren’t laser focused on whatever our target focus or want it, it’s easy to deviate from that target, especially if you have many goals and areas of focus. It’s also easy to deviate from our target if we are curious individuals who are interested in a lot or if we are supporters who continuously want to jump in and support others. I fully believe in supporting each other and on a daily basis, though not when supporting someone is used as an avoidance tactic because you don’t want to execute on your own work. You’d be surprised how many people continuously put others first because they’re too afraid to put themselves first. Again, there’s nothing wrong with this, but when you never put yourself first and your goals because secondary or tertiary, the timeline around your wants, needs and dreams do as well.
Take the time now to evaluate where you are at on your path to hitting the targets you’ve set out for yourself. Get ruthless about it. What did you say you wanted January 1st, 2018, and where are you at right now? There’s no behind timeline, there’s only right now – so if you feel as though your pace is lagging, you get to pick it up and get back to where you ought to be and go.
