Why Leadership Style Is A Market Strategy

March 16, 2020 Leave a Comment

**Disclaimer and note: This article is a microblog intended as food for thought in simple share and snapshot hence digestible character count in form. When you think better you do better, that’s the point.

This post isn’t about Sephora per se, in short form it’s about SME’s and market leaders/conglomerates and their leadership styles during a time when market activity is unlike any other time they’ve experienced. It’s also about defensive strategies.

Businesses who have a high employee count are being responsible right now, and that’s a great thing. I was in Sephora yesterday observing the sentiment and landscape, and the place was immaculately clean and everyone was pleasant not somber, while still taking precautionary measures into account. Will Sephora soon shut doors (foot traffic)? Possibly. Did they issue a notice via email last week on precaution alike many businesses? Yes they did. They’re also taking action to stimulate and maintain business, and drive traffic in other ways vs foot traffic. True, they already do a ton of online business and that still doesn’t mean they can go to sleep.

Point: their approach to business strategy is proactive and defensive. Recognizably so, many conglomerates/market leaders have deeper pockets then many SME’s which grants them the ability to be flexible in business approach when necessary. SME’s who don’t have the cushion or capital are becoming creative, and also doing what they can to weather the current market experience. This comes back to proactive and defensive business strategy, and solid, effective leadership.

Observe leaders who are instilling fear into their employees (and clients) and watch that fear translate into material results and lack. Then, observe leaders who are instilling possibility and respecting reality. Watch the experience they are creating translate into one that may take a hit and be survivable, not a plummet beyond repair.

It’s interesting to watch leadership styles right now and who has previously set their employees and organizations up to win – before anything unusual needed to occur in the atmosphere.

Note: set yourself up to win on the regular and have a strategy to pivot and grow no matter the landscape. Be like Sephora in leadership — and continue supporting local businesses so they can continue to thrive too.
