(6 minute read)
Have you ever dropped money on something and then life happens? I can relate and empathize on this particular topic. I will share a bit of the backside with you because there are important factors at stake here in priority that affect all of us:
- Emotion (and)
- What is a legitimate priority
The punchline in advance: I unexpectedly lost my mom just after making a year long commitment to something that was a brand new concept to me and a bigger investment than I anticipated it being. At the same time the relationship I was in was emotionally unsupportive (being an understatement) and my business was just a baby. I had to decide if I was still committed to getting the life-changing results I signed up for in the first place, despite a heart-wrenching, untimely circumstance beyond my control plus all of the other “things”.
P.S. This message is about helping you understand why you are making decisions and why you are or are not getting the results you want. I can tell you from experience it's all about patterns and choices. I know this, because I continue to see mine and do my best to pattern correct when I'm conscious about what's going on.
It was May 2015 when I invested in my first 12-month online coaching program after a conversation I entered into with the goal of getting “instant help and instant results”. I thought I would invest $1000 in a coaching program across one month and voila c'est ca, I'd be good to go. My word, not so (keep forefront this is a tale of good news). This was an investment I hadn't anticipated or budgeted for and I was still getting used to the concept. I also didn't understand the entirety of the program or the process when I signed up, but what I did know was that I wanted the result.
The key here is that I trusted myself enough in the first place to say yes (and make an investment on the spot) without knowing what would happen in my life personally or professionally across that 12 months (and beyond). I just knew I had it in me to show up because I wanted it that bad and would figure it out; I let go of controlling the result. If you've found yourself reading this you are of the resourceful type yourself, even if you're whispering that curiosity and deep down confidence right now instead of shouting it. I know this, because I whispered and dipped my toes into the pool for a long time too before reminding myself this was a love-based choice not one of fear.
Less than 45 days into the 365 days ahead in this program I unexpectedly lose my mom. I was overseas in Sorrento, Italy, and had just landed after travelling for 36 hours and I got the call. My world rapidly began falling apart and so many pieces came crashing down to a place of, “I don't know where to start.” My mother was my person. My emotions, mind and bank account were rocked. Bottom line, I was just trying to hold the basics together let alone care about my time and monetary investment into the coaching program I'd just signed up for. It wasn't exactly #1 on the list considering.
Speaking to general humanism around the circumstance, I'm paralyzed as f*ck. Paralyzed is fine for a while though there is only so much you can stall around before the show must go on. The same goes for hitting pause in running your business, especially when if you have just transitioned and are just getting things back off the ground.
Ask yourself what kind of excuses you are leaning into to put things off or what kind of reasons you are stepping into get things done. I'm here to support you no matter who is in your world supporting you or not, or who has left you.
Now for how the timing of this all was a blessing.
If you've ever lost anyone, or namely the most important person in your life, you go through a handful of phases. To kick off the range of emotions I was really good at was resentment and blame. I decided the coaching program was the right outlet for my blame and that I wanted it off my plate. Fortunately I had someone in my life leading me and supporting me that wouldn't let me off the hook, who reminded me why I showed up and started in the first place – to be of service and make an impact. I had a responsibility greater than myself and this mentor recognized this in me enough to remind me.
My question to you is: why are you making excuses (if you are) and what are you waiting for?
When you look back in 6 months and are still spinning your wheels trying to make a decision, someone else who's will to serve and make an impact is doing laps around you. The timing is never going to be perfect. Your bank account will never have enough money in it if you don't believe it's worth it to invest in your vision because it won't work. You have to suck up the shitty days and hurdles to get the gold and even when the gold starts to appear, you're still going to have shitty days and hurdles. The key is not blaming externalizers and deciding, ultimately, what means more to you.
I am here to stand for your vision the same way someone (and people still do) continue to stand for mine. Did I mention how wildly different my life has changed for the better (not without withstanding incremental and continuous hurdles)? A massive bonus blessing: opportunity continues to trickle in in ways I never imagined possible when I'm not actively seeking them out. That's what happens when you show up without expectations and trust the process. I'm sharing this with you because I want you to know it is possible for you too.
Ask yourself if you are allowing yourself to surrender into being supported and really taking a stand for what you stand for. Me: I stand for emotional and financial freedom, and for others to achieve this.
I was out running yesterday morning and was proud I made it out having run less than 12 hours earlier before bed. Well, there was a dude clocking-it (running way faster) by my in bare feet on the concrete! I thought to myself, proud? More like just on the course. Seek to push beyond your comfort if you want to see results.
